Parliament’s Climate & Nature Bill Presenter Announced

The Climate and Nature Bill now has a presenter at the UK Parliament announced.

Dr Roz Savage MBE who is MP for South Cotswolds is an excellent choice since she has passionately championed environmental matters for 20 years now.

She will be an excellent ambassador for the cause of preserving nature and for an effective process to prevent irreversible climate change on this amazingly wonderful planet of ours.

The announcement for the CAN Bill sponsor comes at the same time as the WWF Living Planet Report 2024. A report that spells out a bleak future if we do not act decisively soon.

So much valuable advice from those caring for nature, yet across the world, our species, who are stewards of the planet by our capabilities, are seemingly sleepwalking into climate catastrophe. WHY?

The simple reason is that despite all the warning signs of nature’s depletion, ice melt, fires and floods and increasingly more extreme weather, we still care more for our daily life problems than for the future. The calamitous climate event that will occur still seems too far off for most of us.

However, we approach the point of no return, with each missed moment of action necessary to avert disaster in time. The decline in insect populations have been particularly dramatic this year. It is rare to get insect splatter on a car windscreen nowadays where in the past windscreens needed regular cleaning on trips. Roadside verges used to have flowers that teemed with insect life, yet now we struggle to see more than the odd individual on those flowers.

We need the interconnected web of life to survive. We are in imminent danger of breaking that web and are not opening our eyes to the problem.

Opening our eyes is poignant because the main causative agent driving climate change is CO2, the most important and prevalent non-condensable greenhouse gas in our atmosphere. The biggest problem for us is that WE CAN’T SEE IT!

If every little bit of CO2 that we poop out of our fossil fuelled vehicles was red and we saw the atmosphere getting pinker and deeper pink, we would be alarmed at the sight. However, we can’t dye the exhaust fume CO2 so we hurtle blind obliviously towards ever greater danger.

There is one way to see the carbon in the air though and that is by the living organisms that extract it freely and naturally for us all, PLANTS. Cellulose is the commonest molecule on the land surfaces of Earth, locking up that carbon.

We have gone so far down the road to climate catastrophe now that we are fast running out of achievable options to restore the necessary balance of carbon in the atmosphere.

Long term we need to reduce fossil fuel usage at the same time as increasing natural carbon capture with more tree planting on land, along with seagrass in the sea and mangroves along its edges. They, unfortunately now, will not do that in time for our survival.

Our only practical chance now is to grow in massive quantity the only plant that can effectively save us in time, DUCKWEED.

Duckweed is the only plant that we can grow simply and very quickly, and easily stored to lock up the carbon in solid form. It also, by its very specific growing needs, poses no threat if it escapes our growing areas and it does not replace essential agricultural food producing land significantly. That is because it is the one plant we can provide as many Earth surfaces as we need to do the job for us. If it means building towers to grow the duckweed, so be it, because only it can do this in time for us now.

The clock is ticking. The point of no return, ever closer. We will only save ourselves in time if we recognise this invisible danger before it is too late.

The beauty of the duckweed solution is that we can all grow it ourselves, not enough individually to make a difference, because that needs to be done on an industrial scale. By growing just, a small amount we will be able to see exactly how much duckweed we need to grow for even a short journey in a motor vehicle. The duckweed will make the carbon visible to us and that is the one thing that will change our current inability to visualise the danger of too much carbon in CO2 form in the air. Duckweed will reveal the problem and be the cure all at the same time.
